Elegance Reigns SupremeThis classical contemporary penthouse, where everything flows for easy, modern-day living, is a perfect example of the designer’s ability to take a project from paper to finish. The owners bought the 550-square-meter apartment on plan and chose Selwyn Elkin to design its interior and turn it into the luxurious home it is today.
The attention to detail is bewildering – 50 samples of color were tried on the walls alone before the perfect off-white was found. The hallway with its diamond- shaped mirror, gorgeous Persian rug and inlaid Regency chairs, is just an inkling of the rooms to come.
The sitting room features a striking red glass table, leather chairs and a camel-colored leather suite on a shiny granite porcelain floor. The vast kitchen is practical and beautiful with stainless steel and mottled wood surfaces, electrically controlled touch-open drawers with hand-beaten copper handles and every appliance imaginable. Recessed overhead strip lighting and a stainless-steel ceiling fan create a very relaxed atmosphere.
The lounge is the picture of opulence with its gold damask and red cotton velvet sofas, tasseled footstools, inlaid walnut and mahogany table, Chinese porcelain lamp, and floor-to-ceiling beige curtains.
The themes continue throughout the apartment from the hand-painted reproduction Regency dining suite; to the elaborate master bedroom with its writing desk, yellow leather and mahogany chair and rich brown authentic parquet floors; and to the many bathrooms, one of which has honey-colored onyx cabinet tops, crystal handles and a mosaic floor. Every room is worthy of a magazine cover!
