Modern Living MattersFor the owners of this penthouse apartment with its breathtaking views, the kitchen was the center of home life. Baring this in mind, the small space originally designated as the kitchen area, was transformed into a family sitting area for curling up with a good book or to watch TV in a warm, relaxing atmosphere provided by light blue furniture enlivened with gold and chocolate-brown cushions. A built-in fireplace set in granite, has a gas fire to keep the room warm and hospitable during the colder seasons.
The space that was meant to be the official dining room, was beautiful and filled with natural light. Selwyn immediately saw its potential as the hub of activity and home to the owner’s large collection of recipes, utensils and accessories. Today, the kitchen features bar stools, a large central island, a huge plasma screen at one end, and walls tastefully lined with storage cupboards.
The muted elegant shades of brown and taupe were carried through the rest of the apartment to convey the same elegance and warmth. In-keeping with the designer’s consideration of practicality but not at the cost of elegance, electrical shutter boxes and halogen lights are tucked away invisibly under cornices lowered from the high ceilings in each of the rooms. Another example is the pop-up TV at the foot of the bed the main bedroom that disappears when not in use, built-in wardrobes, and fixed side tables flanking the bed. The white quilted leather headboard is another example of how details can turn a room into the lap of luxury. Never overlooking details, is one of Selwyn’s most recognized talents.
